Frequently asked questions about bridge days

Answers about bridge days, leave days, regional holidays, data sources and calendar export. Everything Ledigt calculates, explained in plain terms.

Denne side er skrevet på engelsk.

What is a bridge day?

A bridge day is a workday that sits between a public holiday and a weekend, such as the Friday after Ascension Day. Taking it off joins the holiday and the weekend into one long break. Ledigt calls the leave days you spend on such gaps "leave days" and measures each break in days off per leave day.

How does Ledigt pick the best days?

It marks every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday as free, finds every run of days off that can be joined by spending up to 15 leave days, and ranks the runs by days off per leave day. The combined plan then chooses non-overlapping breaks that give the most days off for the number of leave days you set. The method page has the full description.

Which holidays count as days off?

Only days that the Nager.Date feed marks as Public. Days typed Bank, School, Authorities, Optional or Observance are ignored. Regional holidays count only when you select that region.

Why does my employer's calendar differ from Ledigt?

Employers and collective agreements often add or remove days: a closing day between Christmas and New Year, a free Friday after Ascension Day, or a half day on a holiday eve. Ledigt shows the public calendar. Adjust your plan by the days your workplace gives you.

Does it support regional holidays?

Yes, where the data has them. Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States list regional holidays. Choose a region in the planner or open a regional page for Germany, Spain or the United Kingdom. Austria's regional days in the feed are school holidays, which are not public days off, so they are not counted.

Which years and countries are covered?

Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, for 2026 and 2027. More years are added by running the fetch script, which downloads the next year from Nager.Date.

Are Saturday and Sunday always the weekend?

Yes. Ledigt treats Saturday and Sunday as free in every country in the data set. If you work a different schedule, such as shift work with weekdays off, the leave-day counts will not match your schedule.

Why does the United Kingdom show no one-day bridge?

UK bank holidays are placed on Mondays and Fridays, and the date is moved when a holiday falls on a weekend. They already create long weekends, so no single leave day joins two blocks of days off. Longer plans of several leave days still work.

How do I add a break to my calendar?

Select a break in the planner and choose "Add this break to calendar (.ics)". Import the downloaded file into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. The file is built in your browser and is not uploaded.

Does Ledigt store my plan?

No. There are no accounts. The number of leave days and the sort order are kept in the page address so you can share a link. Your cookie choice is stored in your browser. See the privacy page for details.

How current is the holiday data?

Every calendar page shows when its snapshot was fetched from Nager.Date. The snapshots are committed to the repository and refreshed by a scheduled job, so the site never calls the API while you browse.
