Two Fridays, one gap

Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027. The days between, Monday 28 to Thursday 31 December, are workdays in most countries. Weekends and holidays cover everything else, so the leave days you spend are exactly the workdays in the gap.

Germany, Norway, Denmark and the United States: four leave days

Take Monday 28 to Thursday 31 December. You are off from Friday 25 December to Sunday 3 January: ten days for four leave days. In these countries 24 and 31 December are not listed as public holidays in the Nager.Date feed, so each of those days costs a leave day.

Sweden: three leave days

Nager.Date lists Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and New Year's Eve (Thursday 31 December) as public holidays in Sweden. Only Monday 28, Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 December remain. Three leave days give you Thursday 24 December to Sunday 3 January: eleven days off.

Epiphany is Wednesday 6 January 2027. Add Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 January and the break runs from 24 December to 6 January: fourteen days for five leave days.

Finland: four leave days

Christmas Eve is a public holiday in Finland, New Year's Eve is not. Four leave days (28 to 31 December) give eleven days off from 24 December to 3 January. With Epiphany on Wednesday 6 January, two more leave days (4 and 5 January) stretch it to fourteen days for six leave days.

Check your own rules

Many employers close between Christmas and New Year or treat the eves as half days. Ledigt cannot know your agreement. If your workplace gives you 24 or 31 December off, your real cost is lower than the number shown here.
